Chapter 19Callie

After Maya makes us a simple dinner of leftover chicken pie and vegetables, we leave our dishes in the sink and slump on the couch. She flicks on the TV and nestles into me, her head resting against my shoulder, and I press a kiss to the top of her head.

‘You don’t have to rush off tonight, do you?’ she asks, looking up at me.

I shake my head and lower my mouth to hers. She makes a low guttural sound and our kiss quickly turns urgent, gasping breaths and probing tongues. A fire lights low in my belly, stoked from the kiss we shared on the stage, and every kiss since. A sudden, conflicting tightness grips my chest and my head fills with thoughts of nakedness. I force them away. I want this. I want to be here with Maya, and I want to be the type of girlfriend I’ve never had the chance to be.

Maya breaks the kiss and clutches my face. ‘You’re not running away.’

‘No. I don’t want to run from you.’

We stare at each other, the question of what happens next wedged between us, but I sense that she doesn’t want to make this decision for me. ‘I-I’d like to stay,’ I say. ‘If you want me to, and, if you’re ready to⁠—’

‘Yes, please,’ she says, ‘and I am very, very ready.’

She leads me the short distance to her bedroom, partially closing the door. The low light from the lounge room seeps through the narrow gap. Maya doesn’t switch on a light or lamp, and I’m grateful.

I make out her silhouette pulling back the covers. ‘Come here,’ she says softly.

I move towards her, my stomach jittery, and stretch out beside her.

Her kiss is tentative, and I know she’ll be conscious of moving too quickly, being too forceful. So I yield to the kiss and slip my hand under her T-shirt, stroking her back, signalling I’m okay with this.

She gently tugs on my shirt. ‘Can we take some clothes off?’

‘Yes,’ I breathe.

She pulls off her own top first, followed by her bra, then unbuttons my shirt, my skin tingling as her fingertips brush against me. She drapes herself over me and the sensation of her bare torso on mine forces me to let out a deep, gratifying moan. Her palm skims my breast, making me shiver, while her mouth trails my jaw, nips at my neck, kisses my collarbone and my chest.

‘Is this okay?’ she asks.

‘Yes.’

Her tongue moves over my nipple and I suck back a breath, the ache between my legs becoming too urgent. I guide her mouth back to mine, kissing her hard, groping for the buttons on her skirt. ‘Can we take more clothes off?’ I ask.

She hurriedly removes the rest of her clothing and touches the waistband of my jeans. ‘How about these?’ she asks.

‘Take them off,’ I say.

She does, followed by my underwear, and my head spins from the intoxicating feeling of hot skin against hot skin. We hold each other tight, fingers sinking into flesh.
